Certified, licensed or approved — which electrician do you need?

Certified, licensed and approved are three different things in the UAE, and a company can hold one of them without the other two. The table below shows what each word actually certifies, and who issues it.

A company can be licensed and uncertified, or certified and unapproved. Which combination you need depends on the job: fitting a light needs a licence, opening the main distribution board needs approval as well.

Licensed

A licensed electrical company holds a trade licence whose activity line reads electrical or electromechanical work. General maintenance is a different activity and does not cover fixed wiring.

Certified

Certification tests the person, not the company. The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council certifies electricians by occupation — trade electrician, assistant electrician, electrical technical supervisor, electrical engineer — and issues a personnel conformity certificate.

Approved

Approval is clearance from the electricity authority to touch the supply itself. In Dubai that means DEWA enrolment; in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, an electrical contracting licence from ADDC or AADC under the Department of Energy.

Insured

Liability cover is separate again, and no authority grants it automatically. Ask for the policy, not the assurance — an uninsured company with a valid licence still leaves you carrying the damage.

What a handyman licence does not cover

A general maintenance or handyman trade licence does not authorise fixed electrical work anywhere in the UAE. Ask to see the activity line on the licence, not that a licence exists.

  • Ask which electricity authority covers your address — DEWA in Dubai, ADDC or AADC in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SEWA in Sharjah, EtihadWE in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
