Almost nobody in this trade publishes a price. The handful of Dubai companies that do put washing machine repair in a fairly tight band: a drive belt at AED 150–250, a door lock at AED 150–300, a drain pump at AED 200–400, a motor at AED 300–600, and a full deep-clean service at AED 200–250. Fridges run AED 150–250 for the small stuff like a door seal, AED 250–350 for a gas refill, AED 300–500 for a control board, and AED 450–600 or more if the compressor has gone. Across every appliance, published ranges land between AED 100 and AED 600 for the overwhelming majority of jobs. Cookers, gas stoves and ovens usually sit at the lower end because they're element and thermostat work rather than sealed systems, but no Dubai company publishes a range worth quoting on those, so get two prices before you agree to one.

Then there's the fee nobody explains. Published inspection charges around Dubai sit at AED 50, AED 99, or AED 100–150 depending on the company, and the wording that matters is 'waived if you proceed with the repair.' Some skip it entirely and quote diagnosis free. Others quietly add AED 50–100 on top for a late-night, weekend or holiday call-out. So ask three questions before anyone drives to Dubai Marina or Dubai Hills: what is the call-out fee, is it deducted if I approve the work, and is the quote fixed once you've opened the machine. Someone who won't answer those on the phone won't answer them in your kitchen either.

The water here is desalinated, and then it travels — through building risers, through a tank on the roof, through pipework that in parts of Deira and Bur Dubai has been there a very long time. By the time it reaches your machine it's carrying enough dissolved mineral to leave a white crust on your kettle inside a couple of weeks. Your washing machine's heating element, your dishwasher's spray arms and your water heater all sit in that same water permanently.

Here's the mechanism. Scale coats the heating element, so the machine has to run longer and hotter to hit the same temperature, and then the element burns out. Dishwashers clog at the spray-arm jets and start leaving grit on glasses, which most people blame on the detergent for about six months before they call anyone. Water heaters silt up at the bottom of the tank and lose capacity. It's the same fault pattern in a Business Bay tower as in a Jumeirah villa, because it's the water, not the building.

What actually helps: run a hot empty cycle with a descaler once a month, stop over-dosing detergent because soft-water dosing instructions are not Dubai dosing instructions, and if you're already replacing a heating element for the second time, an inline filter on the machine's feed line costs less than the third one.

The standard rule — replace it if the repair costs more than half a new machine — was written for people who own their home. On a one or two-year lease in JVC or Al Barsha, that rule is answering the wrong question. You don't need to know how many years the machine has left. You need to know how many months.

So run it that way. Take the quote and divide it by the months left on your lease. A AED 350 drain pump repair with sixteen months to run is about AED 22 a month, and almost nothing you can buy new beats that over the same window. The number flips only when the fault is a bearing job or a main control board, because those are the two priciest repairs and they have a habit of being followed by another one.

Two Dubai-specific wrinkles. If you're leaving the country when the lease ends, a repaired machine is a machine you can sell on; a new one bought at month twenty of twenty-four is a gift to the next tenant. And if the appliance was in the apartment when you signed, replacing it may not be your decision at all.

Built-in appliances — the oven under the hob, the integrated dishwasher, the fridge that came with the kitchen — usually belong to the landlord, not to you. Which makes the repair a conversation before it's a job. Read the maintenance clause in your tenancy contract first: some Dubai leases put minor maintenance below an agreed AED figure on the tenant and everything above it on the landlord, and some don't split it that way at all. Get a written diagnosis and quote, send it to the landlord or the building's management, and get approval in writing before anyone opens anything. Paying first and asking later is how tenants in Downtown and Business Bay end up eating a bill that was never theirs.

Two more things to settle before you say yes. Ask whether the spare part is genuine or a copy. For Samsung, LG, Bosch and the other big names, genuine parts are widely stocked in Dubai and there's rarely a good reason to accept a generic board or pump; for less common brands the technician may honestly be sourcing an equivalent, and that's worth knowing before it's fitted rather than after. Then ask for the warranty in writing, because the spread across this market is enormous — published guarantees run from 15 days to a full six months on parts and labour, with 30 to 90 days most common. Same fault, same price, and one company comes back free for half a year while another stops caring after a fortnight.
