A SEWA gas connection in Sharjah is applied for online through the authority's e-Services portal, and SEWA requires a copy of the affection plan plus two sets of gas connection drawings stamped and approved by a consultant. SEWA publishes no connection fee; the last unified piped gas rate reported was AED 1.25 per cubic metre.
Piped natural gas is the thing about Sharjah that nobody warns you about, and the difference from Dubai is sitting in the two authorities' names. Dubai has an Electricity and Water Authority. Sharjah has an Electricity, Water and Gas Authority — a natural gas network under its roads, a meter on your wall, and a rule about who is allowed to touch the pipe. Which is why every fee table you find for a Sharjah gas connection was written with no equivalent next door to check it against. Search the charge and you get five different numbers. Follow one into a contractor's invoice and the difference is yours to argue about.
What follows is built from SEWA's own published requirements, SEWA's own portals, and figures attributed to named officials with dates. Where no such figure exists — and for the connection charge, none does — this guide says so rather than repeating a number somebody else invented.
How do you apply for a SEWA gas connection?
Gas connections in Sharjah are applied for online, and SEWA states the position plainly. The authority's e-Services documentation says users "can complete the entire new connection process without the need to visit any SEWA office physically", and adds that "offline applications or manual submissions at service centers are not supported for these services". A folder of papers carried to a counter is no longer the route for a new connection.
For a resident moving into a flat that already has a gas meter, the path is short. Khaleej Times, reporting SEWA's process on 29 June 2024 and updating it that October, set out the steps as: open the SEWA website or smart app, choose Gas Service Request under the E-services menu, enter your name and email address, add your account number and mobile number, then pick a date from the appointment selector.
For a new building, a villa extension or a road crossing, the application is a different animal: SEWA wants drawings before it wants a date. The requirements for each case are set out below.
What does SEWA need for a building gas connection?
SEWA publishes its gas connection requirements in two sets — one for building projects and one for road projects — and the table below reproduces them as the authority lists them on its own gas service page.
Two details in that list do most of the damage to a homeowner's timeline. The affection plan is the official site plan for the plot, so a gas application for a new building starts with the plot paperwork rather than with SEWA. And the drawings must carry a consultant's seal, which is a professional signature you cannot supply yourself and cannot buy after the fact from a contractor who is not registered to give it.
SEWA publishes the identical requirement list in Arabic, including the stamped-drawings clause, so the obligation is not an artefact of a loose English translation.
Who can install a gas connection in Sharjah?
Not you, and not whichever contractor happens to be on site. SEWA's gas work runs through registered trades, and the authority's own portals show the structure. The SEWA e-Services login offers eight account types — Consultant, Main Contractor, Contractor, Road Contractor, Owner, Tenant, RealEstate and Government — and a contractor or consultant account is opened against a trade licence, with the issuing authority selected from a published list that runs from Sharjah Economic Department and Sharjah Airport International Free Zone through Hamriyah, SHAMS and SRTI Park.
Read with the drawings requirement, the regime is clear enough to act on. A consultant seals the design. A registered contractor executes it. SEWA connects the supply and sets the meter. A homeowner's job is to verify the first two before signing anything, because the one thing SEWA will not do is approve a drawing nobody qualified has stamped.
The conversion side is SEWA's own work rather than a contractor's. The authority states that alongside the piped supply it arranges the conversion of cookers and ovens fired by cylinder gas over to natural gas, fed from the Sharjah gas distribution network.
What are the current charges for a SEWA gas connection in Sharjah?
SEWA publishes no gas connection charge. Reading the authority's gas, services, electricity, water, about and customer-charter pages on 8 October 2026 returns the document requirements and the contact numbers and no price of any kind. The same gas text is served word for word on SEWA's energymeet host, and the energy calculator SEWA does publish covers electricity and water only. The table below therefore gives every gas figure that can be traced to SEWA or to a named report, with the date attached, so you can judge how old each one is.
Neither figure is a current tariff and both are presented here as what was reported when it was reported. Use the AED 1.25 rate to sanity-check a running bill rather than to budget an installation, treat the AED 300 service charge as historic, and get the installation quoted in writing per line item before any work starts.
Why do the gas fee tables online disagree with each other?
Because almost none of them came from SEWA. The most widely copied Sharjah gas fee table — a tidy set of bands for new connection, meter installation, a refundable deposit, a transfer fee and a no-objection certificate — is published by Midas Electromechanical Contracting LLC, a private contracting company in Sharjah Airport International Free Zone. The page carries its own warning: the information "might change from time to time", so "consider it more of a reference", and "for the most current and official information, always consult directly with the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority".
A third tell shows up when you ask an AI assistant. Asked for the Sharjah deposit and gas connection cost on 8 October 2026, ChatGPT answered with a bedroom ladder it attributed to a SEWA service-guide PDF, and that PDF returns a 404 on every SEWA host today. A second tell is internal contradiction. Several of those pages publish a two-tier gas tariff, one rate for homes and a higher one for commercial and industrial use. The only figure attributable to a report of SEWA's own decision says the opposite: charges were unified at AED 1.25 per cubic metre for all customers. A table that disagrees with the single sourced number on the subject is not a more detailed version of it.
Can I register for SEWA online?
Yes, and SEWA runs two separate portals rather than one. The customer portal at eservice.sewa.gov.ae handles household registration and service requests, including the move-in request, and verifies you by one-time passcode to your registered email or mobile number. The owners and professionals portal at eservices.sewa.gov.ae handles the trade side, and signs in through UAE PASS as well as a username.
Identifying the right premises is where applications stall, because SEWA keys everything to the physical supply rather than to your name. Its own premise lookup asks for the electricity meter number or the contract account together with the city, offering Sharjah Main City, Hamriyah, Dhaid, Khorfakkan, Kalba, Madam, Malihah, Batayih and Dibba Al Hesn. Getting the deposit and the electricity and water side right first is covered in our guide to the SEWA deposit and new connection in Sharjah, and the lease paperwork that sits underneath all of it is in our Sharjah tenancy contract guide. SEWA's enquiry line is 600 566665 and its emergency number is 991.
Which parts of Sharjah have piped natural gas?
SEWA describes its piped natural gas service as covering domestic, commercial and industrial use in Sharjah City, supplied through the Sharjah gas distribution network, and states that introduction of piped gas in the Eastern Zone is in progress. The rollout beyond the city is a running programme rather than a finished map, and the table below gives the milestones that carry a named SEWA engineer and a date.
For a tenant, the practical reading is simple enough. A flat in Sharjah city is very likely on the network already, so your application is a meter and an appointment. A villa in the eastern towns may or may not be, so confirm the street before you buy an appliance that only runs on piped gas. SEWA has described its Sharjah network as the first natural gas network in the region, which is also why no neighbouring emirate's guide can tell you how it works.
Getting the gas sorted without getting fleeced
Every gas job in Sharjah has the same two failure modes, and both are avoidable in a single phone call. The first is paying a connection charge that is really a contractor's margin dressed as a government fee. The second is letting an unregistered installer run pipework that SEWA will never energise, which turns a one-visit job into a rip-out and a rebuild.
Ask three questions before anyone quotes: which SEWA portal account type do you hold, what is your trade licence number and issuing authority, and what exactly on this invoice is a SEWA charge rather than yours? A legitimate firm answers all three in a minute. Then get the same scope priced by two more firms, because a market only prices itself honestly when it knows it is being compared.
TaskRight is a verified, zero-commission home services platform in the UAE — every provider is checked before being listed, you deal with them directly, and we take nothing out of the job, so the number you are quoted is the number the work is worth.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a SEWA gas connection cost in Sharjah?
SEWA publishes no gas connection charge on any of its service pages. The only connection figure traceable to a SEWA source is a service charge of up to AED 300 per new connection or reconnection, reported in February 2011. Treat it as historic and ask SEWA and your contractor for itemised figures in writing.
What is the piped gas rate in Sharjah?
The last reported piped natural gas rate in Sharjah is AED 1.25 per cubic metre, which SEWA unified across all customers according to a July 2019 report. Pages quoting a separate, higher commercial rate contradict that unification and cannot be traced to any SEWA statement, so treat them with caution.
What documents does SEWA need for a gas connection?
For a building project in Sharjah, SEWA requires a copy of the affection plan and two sets of gas connection drawings sealed and approved by the consultant. For a road project it requires a letter from the concerned body detailing the work, plus two sets of plans showing the location and naming the roads and areas.
Can a regular plumber install a gas connection in Sharjah?
No. SEWA gas work runs through registered trades, with its portal issuing accounts by type to Consultants, Main Contractors, Contractors and Road Contractors against a trade licence. The drawings must carry a consultant's seal before SEWA will approve them, so a general plumber cannot originate or certify a Sharjah gas installation.
Does all of Sharjah have piped natural gas?
Not yet. SEWA describes piped natural gas as serving Sharjah City with the Eastern Zone rollout in progress, and its own project reports show Dibba Al Hisn completed in July 2026 and Al Dhaid under construction in August 2025. Confirm your specific street with SEWA before buying a gas appliance.
Can I apply for a SEWA gas connection online?
Yes, and online is now the only route. SEWA's e-Services documentation states that the whole new connection process can be completed without visiting an office and that offline or manual submissions at service centres are not supported. Raise a Gas Service Request in the portal and select an appointment date.
Requirements, portal account types, city lists and service statements were read from sewa.gov.ae and SEWA's two e-Services portals on 8 October 2026. The AED 1.25 per cubic metre rate is as reported by Gulf News in July 2019 and the AED 300 service charge as reported by Emirates 24|7 in February 2011; neither is confirmed as a current tariff. Network milestones are as reported by Sharjah 24 and Gulf Today, attributed to the named SEWA engineers. Confirm figures with SEWA on 600 566665 before committing money.
